Commemorating 30 Years Since LIRR Massacre, 6 Killed By Gunfire

Colin Ferguson is serving 315 years in prison for the crimes.

GLEN COVE, NY — It has been 30 years since a gunman opened fire on a crowded LIRR train, killing six people at the Merrillon Ave. station, and altering the lives of dozens of others.

Colin Ferguson, who acted as his own lawyer during the trial, is serving 315 years in prison.

Nineteen suffered various injuries as the bullets were sprayed into the train car headed for Hicksville.

"I still remember the pain I left when I first heard about the Long Island Rail Road massacre, which happened in my own backyard," Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in comments on the Senate floor on Thursday.

In memory of the lives lost on the 5:33 p.m. from Penn Station, Schumer asked for a brief moment of silence.

Carolyn McCarthy, whose husband Dennis was killed and son Kevin was severely injured on the train, used the gun reform issue to become congresswoman, a position the Mineola native held for three terms.
