Drunken Man Was Driving On Wrong Side Of Road: Garden City Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Sept. 29.

Sept. 23

  • As a result of an investigation on 7th Street, Garden City detectives arrested two people on various drug offenses. The first, a 29-year-old man from Mineola, was charged with two counts of possession of hallucinogenic substances and one count of intent to sell hallucinogenic substances. The second, a 29-year-old from Garden City Park, was charged with two counts of possession of hallucinogenic substances and criminal possession of marijuana.
  • Officers investigated a report of two men fleeing the scene after dumping eight large bags of rubbish in the rear of a 7th Street apartment building.
  • A truck traveling north on Cherry Valley Avenue struck the train overpass. The driver, a 41-year-old man from Woodside, was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs. There were no reported injuries.

  • A driver was charged with driving on Stewart Avenue West with a suspended license and unsafe lane usage.

Sept. 25

  • Officers assisted the fire department with a small brush fire on the grounds of the Garden City Golf Club.
  • A man was observed on a surveillance camera checking car door handles on Whitehall Boulevard.

  • A mountain bike was reported stolen near the Community Park baseball fields.
  • Officers investigated a report of a stolen bicycle behind a 7th Street store. After searching the area, a youth was found to be in possession of the stolen bicycle in Parking Field 8. The youth was cited as a juvenile and was released to a parent.
  • During a safe pedestrian detail on 7th Street, two tickets were issued to motorists for illegal U-turns.

Sept. 27

  • A resident called a phone number found on the internet to fix a computer issue. The person on the phone informed the resident to download an app and supply a credit card number. It was later determined to be a scam; the credit card information was used to make an unauthorized purchase.

Sept. 28

  • On Sept. 21, an officer issued tickets to a driver for passing a stop sign on Rockaway Avenue and Merillon Avenue and unlicensed operation. It was later determined the driver falsely identified himself. Upon further investigation, the driver, a 22-year-old man from Port Washington, was arrested for driving with a revoked license, circumventing a court order to drive with an interlock device, as well as the original charge of passing a stop sign.
  • Work crews state a vehicle left the scene after striking and damaging a construction trailer on Franklin Avenue.

Sept. 29

  • A vehicle was stopped on Franklin Avenue for numerous aggressive driving violations. Upon investigation, the driver, a 26-year-old man from Mineola, was arrested for DWI, reckless driving, excessive speed, unsafe lane usage, driving on the wrong side of the road, open alcoholic container in the vehicle, unlicensed operation, and uninsured operation.
  • Property was reported stolen from a vehicle parked in a Wickham Road driveway.

Officers were assigned to STEP (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program) Patrols targeting various traffic violations in the vicinity of schools, bus stops/routes, and student walker locations from Sept. 21 through 25. The following tickets were issued as a result of this initiative:
