Adoption Forum: Parent’s and Children’s Perspectives

Was your holiday season filled with family, friends and togetherness?

For hundreds of Long Island children spending the holidays with a family is just a dream. Currently there are over 1,200 children currently looking for loving homes in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

The Bi-County Nassau/Suffolk Adoption Exchange is hoping that families that have answered “yes” to the question, “Can our family welcome one more member?” will join them at the  Monday, Jan. 31 (6-9 p.m.) for an adoption forum, “Adoption: Parent’s and Children’s Perspectives.”

The Bi-County Adoption Exchange is composed of public and voluntary child care agencies, adoptive/foster parent groups, post-adoption agencies from Nassau and Suffolk counties and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. The group’s mission is to recruit foster and adoptive parents for the children in need, work to improve the child welfare system and to educate the public about the children who need loving foster and adoptive homes.

The adoption forum will bring the public and agencies together to learn about and share ideas about the issues, challenges and rewards of adoption through the foster care system and the resources available for children and families.

There are hundreds of children in foster care that cannot return to relatives and need a loving committed family to help them thrive. This forum will tackle the most common myths associated with foster children and the adoption process.

Experts will be on hand to offer first-person, front-line experience with families considering adoption. The first half of the event will be presented by Jack Brennan of Family Focus Adoption Agency and Patricia Dudley of You Gotta Believe Adoption Agency. They will provide important information about the process, rewards and challenges of adopting.

The second segment will feature a panel comprised by teens who have been through the adoption process. Hear first-person stories of how adoption has changed their lives, how they have handled the transition process and how they deal with questions about their “real” family.

The Long Island Children’s Museum is located at 11 Davis Avenue, Garden City, NY 11530. Directions available   at www.licm.org. Adults wishing to attend the forum should call Denise Alba at 516-747-0563 or 646-335-2438 to reserve seating. (Space is limited). Light refreshments will be served.
