Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University field hockey was crowned an NCAA Division II Statistical Champion for defensive saves for the 2012 season, it was announced on Wednesday.
The Panthers combined to collect 28 defensive saves, which led the nation and outpaced second-place Mercy College by seven. The historical total more than doubled any Northeast-10 Conference opponent, the closest of which was Franklin Pierce with 13 defensive saves.
Adelphi saw three players finish in the top 10 in the country in defensive saves, led by sophomore Briana Rubenstein whose nine defensive saves ranked her third in all of DII field hockey. Senior Emilee Rahner finished sixth with seven stops, while junior Jami DeGrote tied for seventh with six saves.
The accomplishment is the team's second statistical honor since the program was reinstated in 2008 and the first since Jeanette Heimerle '11 led the nation in assists per game in 2010.
Adelphi finished the season with an overall record of 8-12 and a 6-4 mark in conference play, including the first home playoff win in program history with a 4-3 win over Southern Connecticut in the NE-10 Quarterfinals.
