Football Remains Undefeated

The Trojans knew coming into this game that Wantagh didn’t like them and would try to take advantage of their size on both lines of scrimmage to upset the visitors. While Garden City relies on technique, mixing up formations and their ability to get outside with their speed, Wantagh comes right at you, playing smash mouth football to control games.

This matchup was also going to depend on which team could capitalize on the others mistakes, and on this Saturday afternoon that was Garden City. On their first possession the Warriors were forced to punt and GC was able to pounce on a bad snap and take over just outside of the red zone setting up the first of Brian Haeffner’s two touchdowns just four plays later.

The second turnover that turned into Trojan points came with under four minutes in the half as GC’s defense picked off an errant throw inside the twenty to set up Tim Schmelzinger’s first of two touchdowns only four plays later.

Garden City took control of the game in the third quarter with two scoring drives – one on the first possession of the half and the second resulting from another Wantagh turnover, this one a fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

While the Warriors scored two fourth quarter touchdowns the game was well in the hands of Garden City as they took advantage of the Wantagh turnovers.

Key plays of the game – a sack of the Wantagh QB on fourth and inches by John Wotzcak, the tackle of the Wantagh punter by Andrew DeSantis for a 14 yard yard loss, the late first half interception by Tyler Wuchte and the special teams fumble recovery by Erik Wortmann. All of which helped Garden City jump out to a 28-6 lead through three quarters.

First year coach Dave Ettinger has some big shoes to fill of retired head coach Tom Flatley but the team has given him the best start he could have hoped for, a perfect 7-0 record with one game remaining. Next up for the Trojans is a matchup at high scoring Mepham (5-2).
