GARDEN CITY, NY — In response to the coronavirus, the Village of Garden City announced on Sunday that it was canceling programs and closing many facilities.

According to the village, starting today, the Department of Recreation and Parks canceled all of its programs and closed all of its indoor facilities, including the Senior Center. The facilities will remain closed until further notice.

The announcement came as the number of cases on Long Island continues to grow. As of Monday morning, there were 109 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Nassau County. Long Island also saw its first two deaths after the virus killed two in Suffolk County.

In addition, all gatherings of more than 50 people are banned. Supermarkets, pharmacies and gas stations will be allowed to remain open as normal.

"Our primary goal right now is to slow the spread of this virus so that the wave of new infections doesn't crash our healthcare system, and everyone agrees social distancing is the best way to do that," Cuomo said. "This is not a war that can be won alone, which is why New York is partnering with our neighboring states to implement a uniform standard that not only keeps our people safe but also prevents 'state shopping' where residents of one state travel to another and vice versa."
