GARDEN CITY, NY — Traffic complaints are rising in Garden City and Mayor Mary Carter Flanagan addressed the concerns in her weekly column.

She said if the problem is persistent and impacts a larger amount of the community, a petition can be submitted to support the request.

Ultimately, Police Commissioner Kenneth Jackson evaluates all requests and can make necessary recommendations, the mayor said.

Flanagan said the Traffic Commission meetings typically look into adding new stop signs, parking restrictions, traffic lights and adding crosswalks.

Those meetings are held every other month at Village Hall and can be attended in person or via Zoom.

The village has started to make some changes in the Central Section, where residents complained about quality of life issues with traffic.

In the near future, the mayor said, residents will see temporary speed bumps and a raised crosswalk on 7th Street.

In the theme of "traffic calming," as Flanagan calls it, the village is putting together a study to examine if the speed limit should be reduced from 30 to 25 miles per hour. The April 27th meeting will look more into that.
