PLAYOFFS: Garden City Field Hockey Falls Short of NYS Class B Title
The Lady Trojans lost for the first time this season to Lakeland in the Class B finals at Cicero-North Syracuse.
Garden City field hockey last won a New York State title in 2008. With a chance to win another Class B title last weekend, the Lady Trojans needed to get past one very familiar team yet again: Lakeland.
However, like in recent years, Lakeland had Garden City’s number well in hand. The Lady Trojans fell by a 3-1 score in the state finals at Cicero-North Syracuse to finish as runner up for the second season in a row. In 2009, Garden City lost to the same team in the state semifinals followed by the 2010 finals loss.
“I thought our girls played an extremely great game,” said Garden City head coach Diane Chapman. “We had opportunities to put the ball in the cage and we just couldn’t do it. Lakeland is an extremely talented team and they have some extremely talented players.”

Shannon Scavelli and Emma Bozak both scored goals for Lakeland to give their team a 2-0 lead over the Lady Trojans. Midway through the second half, Charlotte Castronovo scored off of a feed from Alexandra Bruno to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Just over six minutes later, Scavelli put the game out of reach with her second goal past 'keeper Laura Fanning, who made three saves in the season-ending effort.

Garden City first defeated Clarke in the semifinals followed by a win over Cold Spring Harbor for its 17th consecutive Nassau County title. The Lady Trojans claimed their seventh consecutive Long Island title with a 2-1 win over Suffolk champion Sayville before heading upstate, where they defeated Maine-Endwell in overtime in the state semifinals, setting up the long-awaited rematch with Lakeland.
Garden City will part with 11 seniors from the 2011 team, including Bruno, Fanning, Catherine McTiernan, Jenna Fuchs and Tara Mahon.
“For any person playing their last game, they would love to win, but for this team to get to the state finals is an incredible accomplishment,” Chapman said. “There is nothing to be ashamed of and they should be very proud of how they all played on the field.”
The Lady Trojans end the season with a 17-1-1 overall record and will look to get back to the state tournament again next season.
