Garden City High School Students Named Scholar-Artists
The two are the first students in the school's history to receive the recognition.

Garden City High School students Grace DeAngelo and Kristen Flynn were chosen as two of 20 Long Island Scholar-Artist winners for the 2019-20 school year by the Long Island Arts Alliance.
The Long Island Arts Alliance sponsors the program in conjunction with The Arts Reach Fund, New York Community Bank and Newsday. Applicants must submit a portfolio, an essay and possess an unweighted grade point average of 90 or above.
DeAngelo is being honored in the visual arts category. She has experimented with printing and silkscreen as well as painting in various medium.

Flynn is being honored in the media arts category. She works with both traditional black and white darkroom photography and digital photography.
“I am extremely proud to announce that, for the first time in Garden City history, two art students have earned the distinction of being named Long Island Scholar-Artists,” said Garden City District Coordinator of Music and the Arts Dr. Nina Prasso. “Grace was nominated by teacher Shawn Uttendorfer and Kristen by teacher Jason Karp. The Long Island Scholar-Artist committee selected them as two of the 20 top artists in Nassau and Suffolk County.”

Long Island Scholar-Artists from Nassau and Suffolk will be featured every month in Newsday and on the Newsday website at www.newsday.com/scholarartists. Flynn's profile is scheduled to appear in February and DeAngelo's in March.
