Garden City Police Being Sued in Federal Court

Man alleges officers used excessive force in his arrest, caused brain injury.

A Garden City man is suing the Garden City Police Department in federal court, alleging officers used excessive force when arresting him in July.

According to the Garden City News, the 25-year-old man suffered a brain injury in 2007 that left him with disabilities including mood disorders with psychotic features. The man and his parents were at his psychiatrist's office on July 13. The man's father said he had called the police earlier in the day to bring the man to the hospital, but they all later decided it was unnecessary.

When the Garden City police arrived, they asked about an injury his mother had, the Garden City News reported. They proceeded to arrest the man, despite protests from his mother. When the man refused to go with them, he claims the officer tackled him to the ground and began to beat him, causing more traumatic brain injury.
