Garden City Students Rally For Global Cause At Badminton Tournament

A charity tournament raised more than $800 for World Central Kitchen.

GARDEN CITY, NY — Garden City High School students played badminton for a special cause – to support World Central Kitchen.

GCHS' world language department put together its annual World Language Badminton Tournament with students volunteering all for a community service effort.

They raised more than $800 for the World Central Kitchen —an organization that provides meals to people who need them around the globe.

There were 49 teams and 98 competitors all participating in the tournament. Students helped manage the bake sale, refereed matches, and volunteered in other ways throughout the day.

Victoria Buonpane, Garden City’s coordinator of
social studies and world languages, said it was wonderful to see students come together for a good cause.

"It reflects our department’s belief that learning languages helps students understand that we are all part of a global community," she said.

Seniors Jayden Lu and Sarah Shamail took home first place, and sophomores Seamus Ryan and Benjamin Wiese earned second.

Students showed off their individuality, and Junior Brielle James and freshman Kaitlyn Varghese won the award for most creative costume at the tournament.
