Garden City's Daley Fit for Pinstripes

Daley had pitched in the big leagues from 2009 to 2011 with Colorado.

Former Garden City High School standout Matt Daley made his New York Yankees debut on Friday night as the Bronx Bombers battled the rival Boston Red Sox.

Daley, who graduated in 2000 after leading Garden City to a state title, had pitched in the big leagues from 2009 to 2011 as a member of the Colorado Rockies.

Newsday caught up with Daley and his former high school coach, who said he didn't expect Daley to have this sort of success.

"People ask me all the time if I saw this coming back then, and the answer is absolutely not," said Rich Smith, who has coached at Garden City for more than 40 years, in an interview with Newsday. "But he persevered and now he's sitting on his dream."

Daley has one career Major League win, which he earned in 2009. Here are his career statistics.
