GC Boys Soccer Defeats Carey

John Simmons strikes the game winner in the second half to carry GC to a 1-0 victory and sole possession of 2nd place.

The Trojans entered the match with Carey with only one loss in Conference play, the same as Carey, so the boys knew that they had a battle in front of them to hold home field advantage in order to remain in sole possession of second place, only a game out of first.

Coming off a 5-1 win at New Hyde Park, Garden City was looking to build momentum as they head into the final stages of the season and needed to fight to the last whistle to keep the momentum going. Facing a stingy Carey defense, the Trojans had to battle hard to get the first, and only, goal of the game off of a strong strike by John Simmons. The offense was led by the aggressive pair of Chris Tavernese and JP Basile challenging for every 50-50 ball all over the field.

Once the GC boys had the lead, coach Paul Cutter tried to keep his defense fresh by matching any of his stellar defenders with captains Jack Fenty and Mark Luglio. Choosing from Matt Lisoski, Jason Hennig, Conor Lehan, Finn Gibbons or Dennis Lind makes Cutter choices easy and hard at the same time. Keeping the team fresh paid off as Carey tried to throw everything they could at Garden City but could not break through the stout defense. And when they were able to get a look at the goal, keeper John Mackey calmly tracked the ball for another shutout - GC”s sixth of the year.
