PHOTOS: Garden City Girls Soccer Defeats Sacred Heart
Garden City wins the annual non-league match 2-0 at Sacred Heart.
The Garden City girls varsity soccer team traveled south on Cathedral Avenue to the beautiful new facility at Sacred Heart Academy to take on the Red and Gold.
The Lady Trojans scored a goal in each half, the first one by Kristen Adams and the second off the foot of Kayla Murphy to defeat Sacred Heart.
Both goals came from inside the 18-yard box as both Adams and Murphy were able to get to loose balls and put them behind an exposed Sacred Heart keeper, Kaitlyn Gorman.
For the visiting Garden City girls it was another solid showing for their backs with Deanna DiPierro, Colette and Megan Seel and Jenna Codignotto leading the way in protecting keepers Taylor Carpentier and Nicole Chtchekine from facing any difficult shots.
As usual the Trojans were solid in the midfield and that helped control the flow of the game and keep the ball in the offensive half of the field. Led by Haley O'Hanlon and Kerry DeFliese the midfielders were all over the ball.
An interesting angle in the game was the matchup of sisters Katherine (GC) and Sarah (SH) Galzerano battling each other in the midfield, as well as long time travel teammates (GC Sparks) Katherine Malhame, Caroline Beaty, O'Hanlon, Murphy and Carpentier of Garden City going against Gorman and Annie Blanco of Sacred Heart.
The girls travel to Cold Spring Harbor on Thursday for an important Conference A-1 league matchup.
