First Round Win for GC Girls

Garden City defeats Bethpage 7-0 in the first round of the Class A girls soccer playoffs.

The GC girls soccer team entered the playoffs as the number 2 seed and showed why with a one sided 7-0 victory over the 15 seed, Bethpage.

In the early going the game looked like it was not shaping up as the final score would indicate as the match stayed scoreless until about 15 minutes remained in the half. And that's when the scoreboard started to light up as Garden City scored four goals to end the half as sisters Lauren and Sam Meisemer sandwiched goals by Caroline Beaty and Kayla Murphy.

With the comfortable 4-0 lead at the half coach Mike Heedles was able to rest his starters and bring on his talented bench to finish the match. Freshmen Kelly George with two goals and Julia McGuire with another completed the scoring for the final 7-0 first round victory.

On the defensive side of the ball Garden City didn't give up too many chances as Kerry DeFliese, Deanna DiPierro and Katherine Galzerano anchored the central defense, while Colette and Megan Seel and Katherine Malhame worked the outside. And in goal it was Taylor Carpentier and Nicole Chtchekine combining in the ninth Trojan shutout of the season.

The second round game will be played at GCHS on Wednesday, October 30th against Clarke. The Lady Trojans defeated Clarke twice during the regular season but know they are facing a tough match.
