Girls Soccer Clinch Conference Title

Before the game Coaches Heedles and McAuley have the team, led by the graduating seniors, jog over to the sideline and the seniors present roses to their parents to honor them for their support throughout the soccer seasons. Along the sideline are placards for each senior that their teammates decorate to honor each of the twelve graduates, a tradition for each of the Garden City teams.

The excitement of the sideline ceremony spurred the girls to have one of their best games of the season, and by far, their best half of the season. Julia McGuire scored the first goal a little over ten minutes into the match and Kelly George buried a volley as the siren sounded to end the first half. Sandwiched between those two goals were scores from Kerry Defliese, Haley Harder and Isabel Klatt to give Garden City a 5-0 lead.

With five goals it’s easy to sit back and let the game come to you, but up five or down one, Heedles looks for the same intensity from his team and on Tuesday he got it. Not looking to score more goals but rather secure the shutout, the Lady Trojans controlled play in the second half and were able to close out the dominating performance by blanking Plainedge.

The victory was the seventh in a row for the girls having outscored their opponents 22-4 during the seven game run. Garden City finished the regular season in Conference AB-1 with a 6-1-3 record to capture the division for the first time in Heedles tenure. Even with two State Championships rings, the girls have not won the Conference title.

Playoffs start at Garden City on Friday afternoon at 3:30.
