Update (11:23 p.m.) Garden City Schools Closed Thursday

According to the National Weather Service, a blizzard warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday; snow accumulations could reach 17 inches.

Sleet quickly turned over to blowing snow around 1:45 p.m. today. The forecast calls for continued snow throughout tonight with north winds gusting around 37 mph. creating snow drifts in areas.

Garden City Department of Public Works crews have been at it all day and will continue working through the night, making several passes as the storm continues to dump more of the white stuff.

Village offices remained open today while the school district announced today's closure yesterday afternoon. Nassau Community College and Adelphi University canceled all classes today too, as did Waldorf School of Garden City, Saint Joseph's School and Saint Anne's School.

As of 10:15 p.m. this evening, Garden City schools announced they are closed again tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 11, as is Waldorf School of Garden City, Saint Joseph School and Saint Anne's School.

Nassau Community College has again canceled all day classes and activities for Thursday, Feb. 11. Evening classes and activities scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and later Thursday, Feb. 11 remain scheduled at this time. No word yet on whether classes have been canceled at Adelphi University.

As of 10:30 p.m. this evening, the Long Island Power Authority is reporting 404 outages within the Town of Hempstead, including 56 reported in Garden City. 

As of 11:35 p.m., the Long Island Rail Road is reporting delays on the Far Rockaway, Hempstead, Port Jefferson, Port Washington and Ronkonkoma branches. 

The LIRR The MTA Long Island Rail Road expects to operate normal morning rush hour service, Thursday, February 11, based on the current forecast for snow accumulations. The LIRR currently has switch heaters on and is operating antifreeze trains. Regular electric train cars are equipped with special scraper shoes to help reduce third rail icing.
