Hempstead Police Officer Fired At Suspect During Traffic Stop

BREAKING: Police have released very little information about the shooting. It is unknown why the officer fired or if anyone was hit.

A Hempstead police officer fired his gun during a traffic stop early Monday morning, Nassau police are now reporting.

According to police, the Hempstead officer pulled over a vehicle for during a traffic stop at 1:34 a.m. on Harvard Street in Hempstead, just blocks from Hofstra University. During the investigation, police say the officer discharged his gun and the driver fled from the scene. The unoccupied car was recovered on nearby Princeton Street.

Police have not released any more information about the shooting, including why the officer discharged his gun, why the car was pulled over or if anyone was injured. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the incident to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
