In the wake of the recent earthquakes that have hit Puerto Rico and left thousands in need, the Town of Hempstead announced that it would be collecting supplies to help the residents of the island.

“The Town of Hempstead is home to a large Puerto Rican population, and our hearts break for the residents who have family that are affected back home,” said Supervisor Don Clavin. “I am proud that the entire Hempstead Town Board is coming together in a show of unity and support for Puerto Rico, and I’m confident that these supplies will go a long way toward helping people who need it most.”

The most recent earthquake to hit was a 5.9 magnitude quake on Saturday. This came just days after a 6.4 magnitude quake rocked the area, which is being called the area’s most powerful earthquake in 100 years. Reportedly, there was one death, many others injured, and thousands have been left without shelter, water or electricity.
