Hempstead Town Raising Greenfield Cemetery Prices

Even dying is more expensive these days.

At a meeting last week, the Town of Hempstead voted to increase fees at Greenfield Cemetery, which it operates.

According to Newsday, the increase is the first time fees have gone up at the cemetery in more than a decade. Because it is owned and operated by the Town of Hempstead, only town residents are allowed to purchase plots there.

The rates for interment are going from $700 to $1,000 for a service Monday through Friday, and from $1,000 to $1,700 for Saturday interments. Additionally, there will be a new fee of $500 for services with less than 24 hours notice, Newsday reported.

Prices for graves are also increasing. A single grave is going from $1,500 to $2,000, while a two-grave plot is going from $3,000 to $4,000.

According to Newsday, the new prices are scheduled to go into effect on April 1.

However, prices at the town cemetery are still considerably lower than Long Island's Catholic cemeteries. Grave prices there are $3,300 for a single grave and $6,600 for a two-grave plot. Interment prices can range from $1,865 to $2,385.
