Photos: GC Girls Top South Side for County Soccer Championship
Garden City takes home the Nassau County championship defeating two-time defending NYS champions South Side.
The Lady Trojans defeated the South Side Cyclones in PK's on Tuesday night at Denton Avenue in front of an almost capacity crowd.
The Garden City girls stood up to the physical play of the Cyclones and were able to walk away with the Nassau County Class A championship for the second time in four years.
In a game that was marked by tremendous defense on both sides it was the speed and athleticism of Garden City that carried them to victory, and the five nicely placed penalty kicks didn't hurt!
Garden City seniors Haley O'Hanlon and Katherine Malhame are the only two that were on the team as freshmen in 2010 when coach Mike Heedles went on a magical run to a state championship. But they were ecstatic after the match when they hugged it out with fellow seniors and long time teammates Taylor Carpentier, Kayla Murphy, Caroline Beaty, Nicole Chtchekine and Kaitlin Shea.
Dominating in the middle of the field on the strength of stoppers Kerry DeFliese and Katherine Galzerano, along with O'Hanlon and sweeper Deanna DiPierro, the Trojans were able to contain South Side's duo of Christine Klaum and Keri Cavallo. And when South Side was able to break in on goal, the play of Garden City keeper Taylor Carpentier kept them off the scoreboard.
Garden City faces Sayville on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. at Denton Avenue Field.
