“In Irish music, there are three elements: goltraí, so sad it brings tears; geantrí, so lively it makes you want to dance; suantrá, so soothing you want to sleep. At a Dervish concert, you experience all three and it leaves you exhilarated!” lead singer Cathy Jordan told world music website, Rock Paper Scissors.
From the Great Wall of China to packed auditoriums in the Holy Land, traditional Irish music group, Dervish will bring their unique sound to the Concert Hall at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, (AUPAC) 1 South Avenue in Garden City, NY on Sunday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m.
The six-piece ensemble, celebrating 25 years, took the name Dervish as it relates to groups of spiritual people, enraptured by music. Since their early beginnings in County Sligo, Ireland, they have recorded 13 albums. Their latest, Thrush in the Storm, was released in the first half of 2013. Dervish’s colorful career has taken them to every corner of the globe and has seen them share center stage with such names as James Brown, The Buena Vista Social Club, Oasis, Sting, REM, Beck and many more.
