Karamo Brown, the three-time Emmy winner, author and culture expert on Netflix’s popular reboot of “Queer Eye,” will share his story and tips for success and living authentically at Adelphi University on Monday, March 2.

During this program, Brown will share his methods and explain how others can recognize and utilize their own different identities to achieve and thrive. He’ll also talk about the importance of giving back and the specific steps we can all take to organize and bring about positive change.

Brown, a graduate of Florida A&M University, worked as a licensed social worker for more than a decade before transitioning into media in 2004 when he was cast as a housemate on the popular MTV series “The Real World,” becoming the first openly-gay African-American in the history of reality television. Whether as an openly gay man, a black man, a Christian, a single father, a son of immigrants, or a former psychotherapist, Brown has discovered that the many facets of his identity are the key to his success.

As an activist, Brown raises awareness about causes close to his heart, and how to organize like-minded individuals to do the same. In 2018, he was the recipient of the Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award. He is also an active member of the Never Again MSD gun-control movement after his high school alma mater, Majory Stoneman Douglas, was the site of a school shooting in 2018. He has also worked alongside former President Barack Obama to support LBGTQ youth through the Obama Foundation and the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance.

Brown is also an author of a memoir, “Karamo: My Story of Embracing Purpose, Healing, and Hope” and the children’s book “I am Perfectly Designed,” an ode to modern families, co-authored with his son, Jason.
