Normal, Ill. - Former Adelphi University baseball player Jamie Liebowitz became the 18th Panther to sign a professional baseball contract when he inked a deal with the Normal CornBelters of the Frontier League on Monday.
"I am very happy for Jamie. He was always a very hard worker and played wherever I asked him to play while he was here," said Adelphi Head Coach Dom Scala. "He always wanted to get to the next level. It just goes to show if you are determined to do something in life and you are resilient, your dreams can come true".
Liebowitz, a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II Preseason All-East Region Second Team pick, hit .271 with 11 doubles, two home runs and 28 RBI in 37 games as a senior. He is the second Adelphi player in the last three years to sign a Frontier League contract, joining 2011 graduate Mike Scudero, who pitched for the Windy City Thunderbolts.
“Jamie gives us a lot of versatility and can play any position on the field," Belters' Player Personnel Director Nick Belmonte told the Central Illinois Pantagraph. "He also gives us a switch hitter for our offense.”
Liebowitz will get the chance to make his professional debut when the CornBelters open the season against the Joliet Slammers on May 9. Be sure to follow the Panthers on Facebook and Twitter for up to date news with all of Adelphi Athletics!
