Local Lax Stars Help Capture Gold Medal in Finland
Stephen Jahelka and Sean Mahon were among the 23 player selected for the USA National U-19 team.
On July 21, the USA U1-19 Team won the gold medal in the international lacrosse world championships after defeating Canada in the gold medal game
in Turku, Finland.
The United States team had narrowly lost to both Canada and the team from the Iroquois Nation during round robin play and then avenged both losses in the championship bracket with the ultimate 10-8 victory over the Canadians for the gold medal.
Team USA dominated on faceoffs, winning 17 of 22 as a team, according to Lacrosse Magazine.

Two Garden City residents, Chaminade graduate Sean Mahon (#3) and Garden City High School (GCHS) graduate Stephen Jahelka (#42) were among the 23 players selected for the USA National U-19 Team. Jahelka talks about the win here.
GCHS lacrosse coach Tom Flatley was awarded the Federation of International Lacrosse Spirit of Lacrosse Award, presented to the person that best represents fair play, sportsmanship, dedication, leadership and a contribution to the game of lacrosse. Flatley also coaches football at the high school.
