Man Seriously Injured After Fireworks Explode In His Hands

Police say the man suffered severe burns and lost several fingers in the explosion on Long Island Sunday night.

A man was seriously injured in Uniondale Sunday night in a fireworks accident, Nassau Police said.

According to police, a 39-year-old man attempted to light a mortar firework at the intersection of Midwood Street and Newport Road at 10:20 p.m. However, the mortar immediately exploded in his hands.

A Nassau Police ambulance transported the man to a hospital for treatment. Police say he suffered serious burns to his face, neck and hands, as well as the loss of several fingers. He is listed in serious but stable condition. Police did not identify the man.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

In 2015, 11 people died while using fireworks nationwide and an estimated 11,900 people were taken to the hospital with fireworks-related injuries.
