Staten Island, N.Y. - Former Adelphi University baseball pitcher Dillon McNamara earned his first professional win on Monday when he hurled a perfect 13th inning for the Staten Island Yankees to preserve a 2-2 tie against the Aberdeen IronBirds in New York-Penn League action. McNamara retired all three batters he faced and picked up the victory in relief after a walk-off single in the bottom of the 13th gave the Yankees a dramatic 3-2 win.
McNamara induced a ground out, strikeout and fly out to sit Aberdeen hitters down in order in Staten Island's third win of the season. Adelphi's reigning career- and single-season saves leader has made three appearances so far for the Yankees and has continued to stifle opposing hitters much as he did in Garden City. McNamara has logged 4.0 innings, given up just two hits and no earned runs while striking out two. Opposing batters are hitting just .182 off the 6-foot-5 righty.
The Staten Island native became the first Adelphi baseball player to be selected in the Major League Baseball Draft since 2011 when the New York Yankees took him in the 27th round on June 8. McNamara was assigned to Staten Island, the Class A Short Season affiliate of the Yankees, and made his professional debut on June 20 when he threw 2.0 frames of scoreless relief against the Hudson Valley Renegades.
McNamara had a historical senior season that saw him land on three All-America teams along with the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division II All-Star Team and Northeast-10 All-Conference First Team. The closer led the NE-10 in saves with 13, posted a microscopic 0.28 earned run average and threw 29.2 innings of relief before allowing an earned run. Adelphi's stopper set the program's single-season and career saves record en route to striking out 43 batters in 32 innings.
