More Than 200 Tickets Issued For Unsafe Driving: Garden City PD

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Sept. 22.

Sept. 16

  • A 24-year-old driver was charged with driving on Clinton Road with a suspended license and driving double the speed limit.
  • Officers and firefighters responded to a residence for a fire alarm. It was determined the alarm was activated by burnt food.
  • A 42-year-old driver was charged with passing a stop sign on Hilton Avenue and driving with a suspended registration.

  • Upon investigation of a late-night intruder on the grounds of the Marine base, officers arrested a 26-year-old man from Lynbrook for criminal trespassing.
  • A resident received a phone call from a person claiming to be from PSEG. The caller stated the resident’s electricity would be turned off unless he called another phone number and pay by credit card. The resident determined it was a scam and did not call the second number.
  • Officers, firefighters and NYU personnel responded to Adelphi University where a contractor severed a large gas main in the vicinity of the university center. The scene was safeguarded, South Avenue was closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic, train service on the Hempstead Line was halted and students were evacuated from affected buildings. National Grid personnel responded and turned off gas service to the area. No injuries were reported.
  • Upon investigation of a license plate reader notification, a Yaphank company was cited for the operation of a truck on Cherry Valley Avenue with a revoked registration and being in violation of NY Highway Use Tax Laws.
  • An officer responded to St. Paul’s to investigate a report of a shattered vehicle windshield.

Sept. 19

  • Officers investigated a phone scam where a resident received a phone call stating her Amazon account was hacked and a purchase was made against it. The resident was then advised to use her credit card to purchase two apps to block the purchase. It was later determined there was a fraudulent charge against her credit card.

  • Officers were assigned traffic and safety details for a protest on Court House Road.

Sept. 21

  • A Little Neck company was charged with operating a truck on Old Country Road while 33,000 pounds overweight.
  • Officers investigated the theft of k-cups from a 7th Street store.
  • A motorist reports driving on Stewart Avenue when another vehicle struck his vehicle and then left the scene.
  • A 50-year-old driver was charged with excessive speed in the vicinity of the Stewart School (65 MPH in a 20 MPH school zone) as well as failure to stop for a police vehicle and unlicensed operation.

Sept. 22

  • A resident reported someone used his personal information to file for unauthorized unemployment benefits.
  • Firefighters and officers responded to Kilburn Road for a report of an odor of natural gas. Upon investigation, the firefighters deemed the area safe.

With the commencement of the school year, officers were assigned to STEP (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program) patrols targeting various traffic violations in the vicinity of schools, bus stops/routes, and student walker locations. The following are the violations found as a result of this initiative:

  • HazMat/Unsafe Load: 7
  • Uninsured Operation: 12
  • Other Traffic/Safety Violations: 76
