Nassau Man Arrested After Fleeing the Scene of Drunk Driving Accident: Police
He had a 13-year-old boy in the car with him while he was driving drunk, police say.

A Hempstead man was arrested early Saturday after police say he drove drunk with a 13-year-old in his car, caused a collision, and then fled the scene on foot.
According to police, Selvin Alvarado-Rodriguez, 30, of Liberty Street, was driving in a 2010 Toyota east on Hempstead Avenue at 2:35 a.m., making a right on to Front Street, when he hit a 2015 Toyota head-on that was stopped at a light and waiting to make a left turn.
Police say Alvarado-Rodriguez and a 13-year-old male passenger both fled the scene on foot. The 31-year-old driver of the car that was hit located the defendant and his minor passenger on Park Place in West Hempstead and was able to bring them both back to the scene after calling police.

According to police, the responding officer determined Alvarado-Rodriguez was operating his vehicle while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. He was transported to a nearby hospital and is being treated for head, back and internal bleeding. The 13-year-old was released to his father with no injuries after being evaluated at a nearby hospital. Alvarado-Rodriguez will be arraigned when practical, and his car was impounded.
Alvarado-Rodriguez is charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident without reporting and unlicensed operation.
