A Freeport man was arrested early Tuesday in Hempstead and charged with attempted murder after Nassau County police say he shot at a man who intervened in an argument he was having with a woman.

According to police, members of the Nassau County Gang Investigation Squad were on patrol at 12:47 a.m. when they saw a disturbance on the corner of Princeton Avenue and Bennett Avenue. As the detectives approached, police say they saw Rashon Williams, 25, of Bennington Avenue, reach into his waistband and then run west on Princeton Avenue.

The detectives gave chase, and police say that they saw Williams throw a black handgun into the backyard of a home on Stewart Avenue as he fled, before being arrested. Assisting detectives managed to recover the gun, police said.

Police say that an investigation revealed that just before the detectives arrived, Williams was in an argument with a woman. A man attempted to intervene and told Williams to leave her alone and that he was going to call police. Williams then pulled out his handgun, police say, and fired a shot at the other man, just narrowly missing him.

Williams was charged with second-degree murder (attempt) and second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Aug. 6 in First District Court in Hempstead.
