National Night Out Event Held at Community Park

Program encourages local police departments and residents to form a partnership to make their communities more safe.

On August 2, 2022, the Garden City Police Department participated in a nation-wide community crime/drug prevention awareness program titled "National Night Out" at Garden City Community Park.

"National Night Out" is a program conducted in communities throughout the country where local police departments and residents form a partnership to make their communities a safer place to live by encouraging residents to:

• Join and/or support local community organizations that address crime and quality of life issues.

• Help make children aware of the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

• Dispose all unused, expired, or unwanted medications at Police Department Headquarters.

• Ensure children know what to do when approached by strangers, either in person or online.

• Participate in the Department’s new Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Program.

During this event, Commissioner Kenneth Jackson, Detective Sergeant Grimes, Detective Roumeliotis and Detective Hennessy met with many residents, including Seniors, Adults, Pool Staff and Children, to discuss current issues that impact the safety and welfare of the community.

In addition, Garden City Detectives, along with Nassau County PD Missing Persons Detective Mike Siarkowicz, promoted the two Departments’ co-sponsorship of the program, “Project Lifesaver.” In this program, families can obtain special transmitter bracelets for at-risk children and adults. If these individuals go missing or cannot be located, Garden City and Nassau County Police Departments can track their whereabouts by utilizing a specially designed tracking receiver. These tools help Officers find these at-risk individuals so that they can be promptly reunited with their families.

Police Commissioner Kenneth Jackson stated, “Events such as National Night Out provide an opportunity for the Department and community to come together and discuss security and safety issues that impact their everyday lives.”
