GARDEN CITY, NY — When Valeria Alfaro Rivera reflects on her journey, one word stands out: resilience.

The Nassau Community College sophomore has been named the 2026 Norman R. McConney, Jr. Award recipient for Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Student Excellence — a statewide honor recognizing students who have overcome significant life obstacles to achieve academic and professional success

"Mental health has played a significant role in shaping my journey," she said. "I’ve had to be resilient. It can be hard, but when you have a system of people in your community, it helps you believe in yourself and know that you’re never alone."

That community — her family, mentors, and the EOP program — helped transform challenges into motivation.

"My family has made so many sacrifices," she said. "I’ve seen how hard my family worked, and it was one of the motivating factors that helped me keep striving."

The sophomore is currently studying criminal justice with plans to attend law school afterwards to pursue her dream of becoming an attorney – a goal fueled by both gratitude and determination. Throughout her time at NCC, she credits the Educational Opportunity Program for being a constant source of support.

"I had so many questions and they were always able to guide me," she said.

When she found out she had won the award, Rivera said she was overjoyed.

"I felt very grateful that my hard work was recognized. I was shocked and grateful because so much work was put in over the years."

Dr. Maria Conzatti, NCC’s chief administrative officer, said they are proud of Rivera and excited to see the continued impact she will make in the community.

"The EOP Award for Student Excellence highlights not only exceptional academic achievement, but also the courage and determination it takes to seize opportunity and turn it into success," she said.

A ceremony hosted by SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. will take place on Monday, Mar. 9, to honor Rivera and other award recipients from across SUNY’s 64 campuses.
