Officers Break Up Fight, Arrest 1: Garden City Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending April 22.
- During an investigation of teens fighting on Cambridge Avenue on April 15, officers arrested a 19-year-old man from Garden City for possession of a forged driver’s license and disorderly conduct.
- Officers responded to a railroad gate malfunction on Nassau Boulevard on April 15.
- Officers responded to Meadow Street for a report of multiple gunshots on April 15. Upon investigation, it was determined the gunshots emanated from a nearby location in Hempstead. Hempstead Police Department is investigating the incident.
- Officers responded to St. Anne’s School on April 16 for a report of a suspicious noise inside the building. Upon investigation, it was determined the noise was a boiler malfunction alarm. St. Anne’s staff was notified.
- A 24-year-old woman was charged with driving on Hilton Avenue with a suspended license and a license plate violation on April 16.
- Upon investigation of gunshots in the vicinity of Fairmount Boulevard on April 17, Officers determined the noise was apparently fireworks.
- A Garden City Plaza business reports two forged checks, totaling $14,100, were fraudulently cashed against the company's checking account on April 17.
- The Police Department assisted firefighters who responded to a residential carbon monoxide alarm activation on April 17. Upon investigation, the carbon monoxide levels in the home appeared normal.
- At approximately 1:40 a.m. on April 18, alert residents of a Willow Street home notified the Police Department when they observed a man inside their car, which was parked in their driveway. Officers responded to the area where one of the residents pointed out the subject who was attempting to flee. The officers apprehended the subject and determined he also stole property from a different vehicle on Willow Street. The subject, a 52-year-old man, was arrested for petty larceny, attempted petty larceny and trespass.
- Officers responded to Avalon Road on April 18 for a water line break. The Garden City Water Department was notified and responded to the scene to render the area safe.
- Officers responded to Washington Avenue and Kingsbury Road on April 19 where a vehicle struck a tree. The driver, a 49-year-old man from Mineola, was arrested for DWI and was transported to a local hospital for multiple injuries. He was charged with felony DWI due to prior DWI arrests.
- Graffiti was found on a stop sign located at St. James Street South and Magnolia Avenue on April 19.
- Officers assisted the fire department who responded to a residential fire alarm that was activated due to burnt food on April 19.
- An officer on patrol on April 19 discovered the safety glass to the bus stop shelter on Franklin Avenue and 11th Street was damaged. NICE was notified.
- An in-street crosswalk sign on 7th Street was found damaged on April 19.
- A fallen tree branch struck and damaged an unoccupied vehicle in Parking Field 7N on April 19.
- Upon investigation, Garden City detectives arrested a 24-year-old man from the Bronx on April 20 for altering a resident’s check to a higher amount and then cashing it. The check was reported stolen from a mailbox in January. The man is charged with identity theft, possession of a forged instrument and grand larceny.
- A resident reported someone attempted to use his personal information to attain an unauthorized car loan on April 20.
- A resident stated he received a fraudulent check for property he sold via an online app on April 21.
