O'Hanlon Powers GC Past Long Beach

The Lady Trojans move on to the County Championship against Manhasset with a 14-7 victory over Long Beach.

The Lady Trojans put together one of their most complete games of the season against Long Beach, a team that gave the Garden City girls some trouble in their first meeting earlier this season. The key to the game was combining a well balanced attack with a defense that stood tall when they were under attack in the second half.

Leading the way for the Trojans was junior Haley O’Hanlon who has come on strong in the last half of the season to help deliver consistent scoring for the team. O’Hanlon has not only been a force scoring goals but she has been key to the quick ball movement that the Trojans display when on the attack. Early in the second half the junior attack's impact on the game could be seen as she hustled to a loose ball in the corner to maintain possession and then delivered a perfect pass to a cutting Krista Dampman for a goal. On the next possession it was O'Hanlon scoring the goal on the receiving end of a nice pass from Tara DeAngelo.

Dampman finished the game with four goals and at times looked unstoppable cutting through the Marines defense; however Long Beach goalie Sarah Resznick came up with 11 saves, many of which were point blank.

Garden City once again received outstanding play in the goal from junior Taylor Carpentier who came up with the big stops when the game looked to tighten up. Carpentier had seven saves and appeared in control throughout the game, except for a strong Long Beach run midway through the second half.

The Marines took advantage of several turnovers and draw wins as they were able to put Garden City on its heels with consecutive goals to cut the lead to 10-6 and then 11-7 as Hannah Sofield and Melissa Rubin scored. But the Trojan defense led by Linda Marie Attanasio took control and closed out the game a way a seven time State champ is supposed to do it.

For Garden City it was Dampman with the four goals, O'Hanlon added three and four assists, Margot McTiernan scored three times, DeAngelo had two goals and an assist and Kerry DeFliese also scored two goals.

While for Long Beach Molly Martin, Melissa Rubin and Hannah Sofield each had two goals and Kaylee Callahan added a goal.

The Lady Trojans will now move on to face Manhasset in the title game on May 29th at Adelphi.
