Photos: Garden City Girls Soccer Captures LI Championship
Lauren Miesemer fought through two defenders to finish off a perfect cross by Katherine Malhame for the game-winning goal.
The dramatic goal with only 2:02 minutes remaining in the last sudden death overtime enabled the Garden City girls soccer team to advance to the semi-finals of the New York State championship against Burnt Hills.
This will be the Trojans second visit to Cortland for the state tournament in the past four years, having won the championship in 2010. The similarities of the two teams is not only apparent on the field, but the run through the playoffs is identical with Garden City besting South Side for the Nassau championship and Sayville for the Long Island championship. As karma would have it the team that the 2010 team beat in the semi-finals was Burnt Hills.
Will history repeat?
Coaches Mike Heedles and Scott McCauley have the girls playing their best soccer of the season with a shut down defense being complimented with timely scoring. Heedles is also getting the most out of his entire team as he is keeping his girls fresh throughout the matches.
In the South Side Nassau championship game he was able to utilize 19 players, while in the Long Island championship match he played 17. Up and down the lineup, the Garden City girls maintained the flow of the game and pressed their opponents.
The semi-final match against Burnt Hills High School will be played Saturday at Tompkins-Cortland Community College.
