Queens Woman Facing Kidnapping Charge After Fleeing Supervised Visitation: Police
The incident took place just after 1:15 p.m. Saturday, police say.
CARLE PLACE, NY. — A Fresh Meadows, Queens woman faces multiple criminal charges this week after she attempted to flee a Carle Place Barnes & Noble with her 7-year-old child during a supervised visitation, police said.
Nassau County police said 41-year-old Charlene Smith was having supervised visitation with her child at the Barnes & Noble Saturday afternoon when she left the bookstore and attempted to flee the location. After investigation, a police helicopter spotted her with the child in the parking lot of Roosevelt Field Mall, at which point Smith was arrested and the child was sent to the hospital for evaluation, police said. No injuries were reported, police said.
Smith now faces a second-degree kidnapping charge, a second-degree charge of criminal contempt, a charge of endangering the welfare of a child and one charge of custodial interference, police said. Her arraignment was scheduled for Sunday, police said.
