Record Setting Weekend for Girls Track

Garden City varsity track teams well represented at the Molloy Stanner Games held on Saturday at the Armory in Manhattan.

After taking the 7 a.m. bus into Manhattan to compete at the Armory in the annual Molloy Stanner Games no one would have expected that the times would be electrifying as the meet went into the afternoon.

To the contrary, the girls squad came out and put up performances that are usually reserved for much later in the season.

Sophomore Laura Jaeger’s third place finish in the 300 meter sprint stamped her name in the Garden City record books with a lightening fast time of 40.58. Also running personal best times in the 300m on Saturday were Kelly Lawkins and Kelly Punturo.

The 1000 meter race produced a one-two finish for the Lady Trojans as Emily O’Neill won the race, followed by Sarah Rubino with times of 3:00.69 and 3:04.90, both personal bests. Jennifer Gerland also produced a personal best in the 1000.

At the triple jump it was another Garden City record setting performance as Alexis Yeboah-Kodie finished fourth with a leap of 35’04.5”, jumping almost two feet further than her prior school record.

In the 600 meter race, Emma Gallagher took first place and Taylor Hennig placed fourth with personal best times of 1:33.74 and 1:36.86, respectively. The time for Gallagher puts her atop the national leader board as the new U.S. #1.  Katherine McGannon also ran a personal best in the 600 meter race.

Closing out the meet, some 10 hours after leaving Garden City, the girls 4x200 turned in the third Garden City record setting performance of the day as the foursome of Emma Gallagher, Laura Jaeger, Alexis Yeboah-Kodie and Taylor Hennig won a very tight race against a tough St. Anthony’s squad.

Hennig held off her challenger on the anchor leg and the girls won the race by less than half of a second. They broke the school record by a little more than 4 seconds, with a current top 10 national time of 1:43.14.

In other significant news, the girls also qualified two relay teams for the 105th running of the Millrose Games - this year being run for the first time at the Armory.

The 4x400 team of Kelly Punturo, Kelly Lawkins, Alexis Yeboah-Kodie and Laura Jaeger ran a 3:59.7 to qualify. While the 4x800 quartet of Emma Gallagher, Taylor Hennig, Emily O’Neill and Katie O’Neill qualified with a U.S. #2 time a week ago, running a 9:21.62.
