Girl Scouts of Nassau County Celebrates National S'mores Day

Girl Scouts of Nassau County recently hosted a celebration of classic campfire traditions for more than 150 Girl Scouts in honor of National S'mores Day. Girl Scouts took part in several exciting activities which included learning how to build a campfire and about campfire safety, telling campfire stories and toasting their own gooey, chocolatey s’mores. The event was part of Girl Scouts of Nassau County's ongoing efforts to bring together the community and empower Girl Scouts with fun, educational, outdoor experiences.

“This National S’mores Day, Girl Scouts were given an opportunity to have a traditional outdoor experience, while learning how to build a campfire and practice campfire safety,” said Rande Bynum, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “Of course, the celebration would not be complete without making their own s’mores, a recipe that can be traced back to an early edition of the Girl Scout handbook. S’mores Day is an opportunity for girls to learn life skills, while enjoying activities outdoors with their friends. Girls can bring what they learned from S’mores Day to their own experiences while camping with their troop or family.”

National S’mores Day has a unique and special meaning to Girl Scouts. The s’more can be traced back to Girl Scouts in 1927 when the original recipe for a “Some More” was first recorded in the Girl Scout handbook, Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts credited to troop leader Loretta Scott Crew. Every year, Girl Scouts honor how the s’more became a campfire staple and changed the game when it comes to campfire snacks.

We are Girl Scouts: Girl Scouts bring their dreams to life and work together to build a better world. Through programs in Nassau County, across Long Island, and from coast to coast, Girl Scouts of all backgrounds and abilities can be unapologetically themselves as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges—whether they want to climb to the top of a tree or the top of their class, lace up their boots for a hike or advocate for climate justice, or make their first best friends. Backed by trusted adult volunteers, mentors, and millions of alum, Girl Scouts lead the way as they find their voices and make changes that affect the issues most important to them.
