Tennis Loses First Match of Season

Girls varsity loses at Syosset.

Maybe it was too much to ask for the girls tennis team to go undefeated after amassing only a 4-10 record last year in Conference One.

But they gave it one heck of a try.

After beating their first eight opponents the Trojans ran into a buzzsaw at Syosset High School Friday. The Lady Braves were seeking revenge after suffering their only loss of the season at Garden City.

"We're both fighting for first place in the conference," said coach Crystal Boyd. "There's a lot on the line today."

Syosset's number one singles player Hannah Camhi, who had already beaten Jacqueline Raynor earlier in the season, was all work and no play. She dominated the match making Raynor run to both corners of the court and used the wind to her advantage. She recorded the victory 6-3 6-2.

Second singles Morgan Herrmann, who has been solid all season in her first year on the team, had a tough three-set match with Syosset's Ashley Sandler. Herrmann lost the first set 4-6 but was able to mount a comeback and win the second. She was not able to keep the momentum on her side and was down quickly in the third 0-5. She was able to pull out a game but Sandler needed only four more points to win the game and match.

Third singles Alyssa Rosello had one of the longer matches of the day beating her opponent in a tough two sets 6-4 7-5.

The only doubles team to record a victory for Garden City was second doubles Brittany Burke and Laura Ketijian.

The final match score was Syosset 5 Garden City 2.
