The Garden City Library, A Constant Hub of Activity

There's always something on tap for children and adults alike, no matter what day of the week.

The Garden City Public Library's calendar of events seems to have something of interest for any Garden City resident, no matter what their age.

In the Children's Room, A Time For Kids featuring Donna Green will present "Magic and Movement Under the Big Top" Saturday, March 6, at either 9:30 or 10:45 a.m. for youngsters 2-5 years old with a caregiver. Registration begins Saturday, Feb. 27 on Eventkeeper at 9 a.m. and is required.

The Children's Department will also offer an assortment of games for youngsters March 6. The program, which does not require registration, will take place at 1 p.m. for Grades K-2 and later at 2:30 p.m. for Grades 3-5.

Session II of the popular program, Mother Goose Storytime, offers the library's youngest visitors, children ages 18-29 months with an adult caregiver, a 30-minute introduction to storytime featuring stories, songs and sometimes book-based films. There are currently openings for Session II; registration is required in the Children's Room.

Chapter Chat, another popular program, introduces second graders to book discussion featuring games and crafts. The next meeting will be held Wednesday, March 3 between 4-4:45 p.m. Roscoe Riley Rules: Never Walk in Shoes that Talk by Katherine Applegate is up for discussion.

On March 10, the library offers "The Super Book Bowl," encouraging children in Grades 3-5 to read sports fiction. Head down to the library Wednesday, March 10, at 5:30 p.m. for games, friendly competitions and more. "The Super Book Bowl" is the Book Ends' second program. The library encourages participants to bring a brown bag dinner. Registration is required in the Children's Room.

On a regular basis, the Children's Room also offers a circulating collection of children's periodicals, like Sports Illustrated for Kids, American Girl magazine, Kids Discover, National Geographic For Kids and many more.

For Garden City's young adults, the library will present a special showing of the classic film Hoosiers Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Registration is required in the Young Adult department.

MaryAnn Impostato of Kids' Edible Creations will return to the Young Adult Department for a workshop on molding chocolates. Registration begins March 13 at 9 a.m. The workshop, which is limited to 20 participants, will enable youngsters to create their very own trinket box made completely of chocolate and decorated and wrapped in Easter grass and pastel-colored bows.

Registration also begins March 13 at 9 a.m. for the library's popular Yak & Snack program. Finding Buck McHenry by Alfred Slote is up for discussion. Join Librarian Melinda Alford and watch the movie version and discuss how Slote's book and the film are different and yet similar. Cracker Jacks, cupcakes, peanuts and popcorn will be served. This program is also limited to 20 participants.

All Young Adult programs are intended for students in Grade 6-12; registration may now be conveniently done through the library's online calendar system, Eventkeeper. Stay on top of upcoming events and registration dates at www.gardencitypl.org.

The library is currently offering several exhibits too, including a themed display about the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's discovery and oil paintings by Jack Grimando, a graduate of the Pratt Institute and an illustrator for the US Postal Service for the past 37 years.

Every Monday, head down to the library for its popular "Marvelous Movie Matinee" in the large meeting room. And don't miss a discussion on the history and beauty of Old Westbury Gardens today at 2 p.m. when Paul Hunchak presents rarely seen archival photos of these gardens. 

This Wednesday at 7 p.m. join Ofra Levin, founder of Ofra Jewels, as she instructs adult participants on how to design a necklace using semi-precious stones.

Priority for registration and participation is given to Garden City Public Library cardholders. All programs are made possible through funding provided by The Friends of The Garden City Public Library, which relies on the community for financial support.
