Tropical Storm Isaias Caused 220 Incidents Around Village: GCPD

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Aug. 5.

  • Someone filed for unauthorized unemployment benefits using a resident's personal information on July 29.
  • Officers investigated a report of a damaged exterior window at the Waldorf School on July 29.
  • A door wreath was reported stolen from a Garden Street home on July 29.
  • Several items were reported stolen from the property of a 9th Street home on July 29.
  • Officers were assigned to safety details for a protest rally on Franklin Avenue on July 29.
  • As a result of a traffic stop investigation on Cherry Valley Avenue on July 30, officers arrested a 29-year-old man for driving with seven license suspensions and excessive speed.
  • Upon investigation of a domestic incident on July 31, officers arrested a 39-year-old man from Garden City for damaging property of a female family member as well as threatening to injure her. He was charged with criminal mischief and harassment.
  • Officers responded to several storm-related calls (tree limb down, alarms, hazardous conditions) during the early morning hours on July 31.
  • Loose change was reported stolen from a vehicle on Linden Street on Aug. 1.
  • On Aug. 2, officers investigated a report of a person's identity being used to open an unauthorized online account and to file for fraudulent unemployment benefits.
  • A 20-year-old driver was charged with driving on Stewart Avenue at Tullamore Road with a suspended license and excessive speed on July 3.
  • As a result of Tropical Storm Isaias, there were more than 220 reported incidents on Aug. 4. Officers, firefighters and DPW/Tree Department personnel responded to numerous reports of trees falling on houses, power lines, roads, fences, vehicles and on the railroad tracks at the Cathedral Avenue Crossing where train service was suspended on the Hempstead Line. Several houses suffered severe damage, as did many vehicles. In addition, units responded to numerous reports of house fires, alarms, tree fires, wires down, power line/transformer fires, power outages, traffic light malfunctions, damaged gas lines, auto accidents, property damage reports, medical aided reports and disabled cars.
  • CVS reports a man entered the store, removed several grooming items from a shelf, and proceeded to leave the premise without paying on Aug. 4.
