Visions '11 for PHAN Fans

The Photo Artists’ Network (PHAN) is exhibiting 48 photos in their Visions '11 show at Barnes Gallery.

With the official start of the show, gallery owner Greg Schnoor welcomed more than 100 people who were there for the opportunity to meet the talented photographers and discuss their work at an opening reception held Oct. 1.

“The photographs of the animals by Haig Hachadoorian were incredible!” photographer Diana Davis of Massachusetts exclaimed. “It was an interesting show with so many different styles. The lighting was amazing with John Micheal’s photos also.”

Many agreed there was quite a variety of subjects and techniques that always keep visitors to Barnes coming back to see what PHAN is doing next.

Newcomer to PHAN, Jim Pelzer, shoots with a Canon 5D Mark II camera. The Manhasset resident likes it because of its high resolution. Pelzer said it takes him a few hours to get each photo perfect as he manipulates his images on the computer by bringing out certain areas and suppressing others. He prints his own photos on Ilford Galerie paper using an Epson 3880 printer. He had four photo landscapes in the show that had lovely color and his favorite place to take photos is in the Adirondack Mountains. “Morning Light” is an example.

Phyllis Goodfriend’s body of work is printed in sepia this year. The effect creates an old-fashioned, timeless quality with her seascapes such as “Stepping Stone Lighthouse.”

In reference to the “Deer Island” photograph, Goodfriend remarked, it “…is in Canada, actually quite close to Maine in the waters off New Brunswick. It is a somewhat forsaken place, but I love to photograph in out-of-the-way places.”

With musical accompaniment from the Music Academy of Garden City - John Coco on guitar, Chris Thaw on drums and Jim DiGirolomo on bass - patrons enjoyed catered hors d'oeuvres and drinks.

The show continues until the end of October. PHAN is a group of 12 talented photographers from the Town of North Hempstead. It consists of Jan Altes, John Bruno, Barbara Field, Phyllis Goodfriend, Haig Hachadoorian, Monroe Halpern, John Micheals, George Novello, Jim Pelzer, Linda Russo, John Siegel and Susan Tiffen.
