This Week Crime In Garden City: Rikers Island, Identity Theft, LIRR Rubbish Fire

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Incorporated Village of Garden City released its crime report for the week ending Tuesday, May 12

The items reported took place between May 6 and May 12 and are as follows:

May 12:
- GCPD officers responded to a car crash with injuries on Stewart Ave. at Hampton Rd. Four people, including a child, were transported to the hospital.
- GCPD and GCFD responded to a home for an automatic fire alarm that was activated by smoke from cooking.
May 11:

- GCPD officers interviewed a Garden City resident who reported an identity theft regarding a stolen/altered check that had been cashed, resulting in a $10,000 financial loss.
Detectives are investigating. - Officers interviewed a resident who reported an identity theft involving numerous attempted unauthorized charges on multiple credit cards. Detectives are investigating.
May 10:
- Officers responded to a Franklin Ave. restaurant for a report of loud music. Upon arrival, numerous cars were leaving the parking lot, apparently after a party, and the restaurant was quiet.
- GCPD and GCFD responded to Rockaway Ave. in the vicinity of Herricks Rd. for a report of smoke in the area. Upon arrival, there was a rubbish fire on LIRR property that was extinguished by GCFD. LIRR PD and the NCFM were on scene. Detectives are investigating.
May 9:
- GCPD and GCFD responded to a home for an automatic fire alarm that was activated by shower steam.
- Officers responded to Stewart Ave. and Franklin Ave. for a report of a car crash involving a village-owned light pole. Both of the vehicle occupants reported torso pain and were transported to the hospital.
May 8:
- A resident reported identity theft. $127,090 was reported transferred/withdrawn in multiple transactions since April 21, 2026.
- GCPD and GCFD responded to a mulch fire in Parking Field 9E. Prior to FD arrival, the fire was extinguished by a Garden City police officer with his department's fire extinguisher.
- GCPD stopped a passenger van on Meadow St. Investigation revealed the van had improper license plates and the operator had a revoked New York license. Van was impounded due to the listed infractions.
May 7:
- GCPD responded to a Garden City residence for a package larceny. An engine filter valued at $50 was accused to be stolen from the front doorstep.
- Officers responded to a home for a $1,266 identity theft report.
- GCPD Detectives responded to Rikers Island to arrest a subject suspected of a burglary in April of 2025.
May 6:
- GC Detective Division arrested a 25-year-old woman after grand larceny, identity theft, and possession of a forged instrument.
