This Week Crime In Garden City: Vaping, Fire Alarms, Lost Dog, And Identity Theft

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Inc. Village of Garden City released its crime report for the week ending Wednesday, March 3.

The Inc. Village of Garden City shared a more extensive crime report on its Facebook page.

The items reported took place between Feb. 11 and Feb. 24, and are as follows:

Tuesday, 3/3:

  • A grand larceny report involving a wire transfer scam.
  • A resident of Euston Rd. reported an instance of identity theft involving fraud related to a National Grid payment request to an address he does not own.
  • GCFD and GCPD responded to Franklin Ave. for an automatic alarm set off by steam from a dishwasher opening at a business.

Monday, 3/2:

  • GCFD and GCPD responded to the Library at Adelphi U for an automatic alarm set off by vaping.
  • GCFD and GCPD responded to a business on Franklin Ave. for an automatic alarm set off by vaping.
  • Officers conducted Community Policing events at Houses of Worship throughout the Village as a proactive measure.

Sunday, 3/1:

  • Officers responded to Herricks Rd. and Rockaway Ave. for a water main break.
  • GCPD responded to a Brook St. residence for a lost dog – the dog was returned to its owner by a neighbor.
  • A 26-year-old man was arrested for criminal contempt after he violated an order of protection.

Saturday, 2/28:

  • Officers responded to a dispute between drivers; however, upon arrival, the drivers did not want to reveal their names or details and left the area.
  • Officers were present at the County Executive Building on Franklin Ave. for a "No War in Iran" protest attended by 40 protestors.
  • GCPD responded to a 3rd Place residence for the report of an attempted larceny of a snowblower. The homeowner was alerted by home video surveillance. The person walked
    the unit to the street but then left on a bicycle. GCDD is investigating the incident.

Friday, 2/27:

  • A Traffic Unit Officer stopped a Washington Ave. driver for having a suspended registration. Further investigation revealed multiple other violations, resulting in the vehicle's impoundment.
  • GCPD responded to North Ave. and Brompton Rd. for "youths" running through a yard. The minors were Gone on Arrival (GOA).
  • A Willow St. resident reported a vehicle entry of his parked vehicle during overnight hours. There was no reported loss.
  • A Franklin Ave. business reported the theft of merchandise. The suspected person was not at the location upon police arrival. The video was unclear, and the store manager declined prosecution.

Thursday, 2/26:

  • A Maple St. resident reported a petit larceny of gift cards that were placed in a mailbox. The gift cards were not received. The resident went to the store where they were purchased and confirmed the gift cards' funds had been depleted.
  • Identity theft occurred to a Kilburn Rd. resident – bank fraud investigators advised that an in-person fraud occurred at a NY branch a day prior.

Wednesday, 2/25:

  • GCFD and GCPD responded to Adelphi University for an automatic fire alarm set off by burning food.
  • A stolen identity report was submitted by a resident at Cathedral Ave. House of Worship.
  • GCFD and GCPD responded to a business on 7th St. for an automatic fire alarm caused by an overheated rag in a dryer.
