Why does everyone hate flossing?

We all know we should floss but most of us do not. Don't call the dental police, but even I am guilty of skipping out on flossing when I'm tired. As a dentist, I've heard every excuse in the book ranging from it makes my gums bleed to I just hate it. The bottom line is that brushing your teeth and not flossing is like washing your hands but not cleaning in between your fingers! Gross, right? Hopefully that puts a little perspective on the matter. Flossing helps prevent periodontal disease as well as cavities in between the teeth. If your gums bleed when you floss generally it is because your not flossing enough. The gums need to become de-sensitized by regular flossing so the bleeding will cease. Its always best however, to have a dentist examine your mouth if bleeding gums persist. The best time to floss is at night before bed. Make a habit of it. Leave your floss in a location such as on a nightstand so you will see it each night before bed, triggering the reminder. Eventually by seeing your floss each night it will start to build a habit and you'll be on your way to pristine oral hygiene. Happy Flossing!
