Woman Stole $62,000 Dogs: Garden City Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending March 3.
Feb. 24
- A woman received a phone call from a person claiming to be from Social Security. The caller informed the woman her social security number was compromised and required money to be mailed to an out of state address to resolve the issue. The call was later determined to be a scam.

- A person’s identity was reportedly stolen and used to open a small business loan.
Feb. 26
- A 43-year-old driver was arrested on Willow Street for possession of a forged registration, unregistered vehicle, uninsured vehicle, and improper lane usage.
- The bumper of a vehicle parked on Meadbrook Road was found damaged by unknown means.
- A driver was charged with reckless driving on Clinton Road.
- Police assisted the Garden City Fire Department for a fire alarm at a Franklin Avenue business. Upon investigation, firefighters determined the cause to be a faulty circuit breaker.

- Detectives charged a 59-year-old man with leaving the scene of a Feb. 21 auto accident on Old Country Road.
- A driver was charged with driving on Clinton Road with a suspended license as well as excessive speed and unregistered vehicle.
Feb. 28
- As a result of a domestic incident investigation, officers arrested a 49-year-old man for damaging items in his family’s home. He was charged with criminal mischief.
March 1
- Garden City detectives arrested a 33-year-old woman for grand larceny. A man had left one adult American Bully dog and eight American Bully puppies in the care of the woman, who arranged for another person to take the dogs without the owner’s consent. The value of the dogs is approximately $62,000. The investigation is ongoing regarding the second person.
- The department is investigating a report of a person depositing a $5,500 forged check at a Franklin Avenue Bank.
- A driver was arrested for driving on Franklin Avenue with twenty-three license suspensions and excessive speed.
March 2
- Garden City detectives are investigating the reported theft of assorted jewelry from an elderly woman’s home during the past month.
- A driver was charged with driving on Cathedral Avenue at 4th Street with a suspended license and operating a portable electronic device.
- Garden City police and the state Department of Transportation conducted a commercial vehicle inspection on Clinton Road. Ten trucks were inspected, of which three were placed out of service. Forty-six tickets were issued for various traffic and safety violations including six overweight violations, four hazmat violations and one unsecured load violation.
March 3
- Graffiti was found on a Stewart Avenue utility box.
- Officers investigated six reports of victims’ identities being stolen and used to file for false unemployment benefits during the week.
