Woman Was Driving With 26 License Suspensions: Garden City Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Sept. 8.

Sept. 2

  • Police officers assisted a parent by safely removing a child accidentally locked inside a car.
  • Officers investigated a report where an elderly victim received a phone call from a man claiming to be a lawyer who stated the victim's granddaughter was arrested out of state and required $14,000 for bail. The victim complied and sent the money to the lawyer. It was later determined to be a scam.
  • A commercial vehicle safety inspection was conducted on Clinton Road. Ten trucks were inspected with seven being placed out of service. Forty-one tickets were issued for various traffic and safety violations, including four overweight violations and three unsecured load violations.

  • A bicycle was reported stolen from the driveway of a Brook Street residence.
  • Officers investigated an identity theft report where a resident's personal information was used to open an unauthorized business account.

Sept. 4

  • Officers responded to a Devereux Road residence and investigated a report of a man trespassing on the property and asking the residents lewd questions.

  • Officers and firefighters responded to a working house fire on Hilton Avenue at 1 a.m. The fire appeared to have started in the front porch area. The residents were able to exit the house safely. Garden City firefighters, with assistance from neighboring agencies, extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.
  • A 23-year-old driver was charged with driving on Stewart Avenue West with four license suspensions and excessive speed.
  • Upon investigation of a loud party at a Garden City home, Officers observed numerous minors inside the home with alcohol present. The 17-year-old resident who hosted the party was charged with violation of the village's Social Host Law.
  • A 60-year-old driver was charged with excessive speed on Clinton Road and driving with seven license suspensions.

Sept. 6

  • Two bicycles were reported stolen from the east end of 7th Street.
  • Officers responded to Garden Street for a report of four subjects checking car door handles on residential properties. Upon search of the area, Officers located the youths, ages 14-16, on Willow Street. They were cited as juveniles and released to a parent.

Sept. 7

  • During the afternoon hours, officers received a report of a burglary at a Meadow Street residence where a wallet was taken from a dining room table. The homeowner found the dining room window open when she woke up in the morning. The burglary possibly occurred at 3:30 a.m. when a family member heard a noise outside the home.
  • A resident reports his car was damaged, apparently by another vehicle, while parked on Osborne Road.
  • As a result of a traffic investigation on Rockaway Avenue, a 26-year-old driver was charged with driving with a suspended license and unregistered vehicle.
  • Officers assisted a homeowner with freeing a puppy whose head was stuck in a baby gate. The puppy was not injured.

Sept. 8

  • Upon investigation of a domestic incident, officers arrested a 36-year-old man from Garden City for spraying bug spray into the eyes of another family member causing pain and numbness. The subject was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
  • Upon investigation of a vehicle stopped on Rockaway Avenue for traveling 45 MPH in a 20 MPH school zone, Officers arrested a 29-year-old woman for driving with 26 license suspensions and excessive speed.
  • A truck traveling south struck the Cherry Valley train trestle. The truck suffered damage; no injuries were reported. The 34-year-old driver was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs.
  • During the first day of school, two drivers were charged with passing stopped school buses.
