Women's Basketball Knocks Off #24 Assumption, 66-58

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team used the strength of a 14 point halftime advantage to upset the #24 Assumption College Greyhounds 66-58 on Saturday afternoon in the Center for Recreation and Sports. With their third straight win, the Panthers improve to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the NE-10 while handing the Greyhounds their first loss of the season. Assumption falls to 6-1 and 5-1 in conference play.

The Panthers were led on offense by Jessica Kitrys who led all scorers with 22 points and Kelly Mannix, who recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 80 percent from behind the three point arc. Sade Jackson was the third Panther in double figures with 10 points. The Greyhounds were led by Katy Howard, who scored 11 points.

The Panthers opened the game on a 7-0 run, courtesy of a three from Jackson and two buckets from Kitrys. The Greyhounds closed the early gap to 7-5, but the Panthers unleashed another 7-0 run, behind more scoring from Kitrys and a three from Shannon Flynn, to take their lead to 14-5. The Panthers' lead would swell to 20-8 on the back on consecutive layups from Kitrys, but the visitors would use an 8-2 run to bring the score to 22-16 with under nine minutes remaining in the half.

The Brown and Gold would take their lead back to double figures behind a foul shot from Jenna Halaby and consecutive threes from Mannix and Tara Flynn to lead 29-16. A pair of free throws from Brenna Gonsalves would cap the hosts' 9-0 run and give them a 15-point lead, 31-16. The Panthers would take a 36-22 lead into halftime largely due to the play of Kitrys, as 19 of her points came in the first frame.

The Greyhounds would come out of halftime hot, scoring seven points in the span of less than two minutes, cutting the Panthers' lead to 36-29. A layup from Kitrys would open Adelphi's scoring in the second half and two consecutive threes from Samantha Milhaven gave Adelphi a 13-point cushion at 49-36 with 11:38 remaining.

Assumption would use a 7-0 run to pull back to 49-43, but a three from Mannix from well behind the arc gave Adelphi a nine point advantage with 8:35 remaining. The visitors would pull back to within six, but another three from Mannix restored Adelphi's advantage.

A 5-2 Greyhound run would bring them back to 58-54 with just under two minutes to go, but Mannix found the three again to give the Brown and Gold a 61-54 lead with 1:01 remaining. The Greyhounds were forced to foul, and the Panthers made five of six from the line to close out the win, 66-58.

The Panthers will return to action on Tuesday, December 4, when they will welcome the Setters of Pace University into the Center for Recreation and Sports. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
