WW II-Era Mortar Shell Causes Bomb Scare In Nassau Village
The decades-old explosive was found in a home over the weekend, and was taken out of the house by the bomb squad.
A decades-old mortar shell caused a bomb scare in Garden City last weekend.
According to the Garden City Police Department, officers responded to a home on Harvard Street on Aug. 12 when a mortar shell dating back to World War II was found in the home. Police say it was the property of a previous owner.
The area was cordoned off and nearby homes were evacuated. The Garden City Fire Department and ambulances were put on standby, and the Nassau County Police Department Bomb Squad responded to the scene.

After an investigation, the bomb squad said the shell did not appear to be live. It was removed from the home by the bomb squad and taken for further examination.
