2013 NCBWA Division II Preseason Poll/All-Region Teams
Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi University baseball senior captain Anthony Zarrella was named to the 2013 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II Preseason All-East Region Second Team, it was announced on Friday. After an impressive junior campaign, the power-hitting first baseman will look to lead the Panthers back to regional prominence in 2013.
Zarrella, a 2012 American Baseball Coaches Association All-East Region Second Team pick and Northeast-10 All-Conference Second Team selection, led last year's team in 10 offensive categories, including hits (54), home runs (9), runs scored (35), RBI (41), doubles (13), total bases (96), slugging percentage (.575), walks (24), on-base percentage (418) and stolen bases (10). The first baseman ranked third in the NE-10 in slugging percentage and extra-base hits, finished fifth in homers, sixth in RBI and 10th in doubles.
The senior is in good company on the All-Region squads, edged only by Franklin Pierce junior Zach Mathieu as the top first baseman in the region. Mathieu's monster 2012 season resulted in a nod as a semifinalist for College Baseball Lineup's Tino Martinez Division II Player of the Year Award and earned him NE-10 Player of the Year, Daktronics East Region Player of the Year and ABCA All-America honors.
Zarrella and the Panthers open the 2013 season on Monday, February 25, when they host Bloomfield College at 3 p.m.
